In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) are jointly preparing a Tier 2 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Chicago to Joliet High-Speed Rail (HSR) Project.
This Tier 2 EIS represents the next stage in the EIS tiering process associated with the Chicago to St. Louis HSR Corridor Program. It will study in greater detail the Metra Rock Island District (RID) corridor that was identified as the preferred alignment between Chicago and Joliet in the Chicago to St. Louis HSR Tier 1 Record of Decision issued in 2012. The Chicago to Joliet study will evaluate the environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic impacts of upgrading the Metra Rock Island District corridor to accommodate high-speed passenger rail service.
An important component of the Chicago to Joliet HSR Project is public involvement. The core of this effort is to keep the public well informed about the project and notified of important milestones, including public meetings, hearings, and events.
